Lapis


This ancient gemstone comes from a rock that is colored by lazurite making it a rock of varying composition. Lapis comes in various shades of blue and is most often found with various speckles of white calcite as well as yellow pyrite. The name comes from the Spanish word meaning “pencil” and has been historically used by ancient Egyptians as a source of protection and a symbol of truth. Lapis can be found all over the world including Chile, the Soviet Union and the United States, however it is most significantly found in Afghanistan.
